No doubt, grape is the largest fruit crop in the world, and most (about 80%) of the harvested fruit is used to make glorious wine. However, this is not our interest in cosmetics, apothecary and cosmeceuticals. The main by-product of the wine industry is called grape marc which contains of the stalks, skin, pulp and seeds that remain after processing the grapes. This is our interest in the production and formulation of cosmetics, toiletries, cosmeceuticals and generally apothecary. Certainly because of the economical interest of the grape, its chemical composition has been accurately determined. The grapeseed extract which you can find abundantly in Dr. Isidor Apothecary and Perfumery products has a stronger antioxidant power than vitamin C, E and beta-carotene. A lot of studies on grape compounds have been focused on resveratrol; awesome compound of the grape. Red grape extracts and active principles are widely used in cosmetic products, not just currently, the use of grape extract in cosmetic and skin care is known for millennia. Also the antioxidant power of grape’s flavonoids and polyphenols contrast aging process induced by UV radiations and devastating free radicals. In a complex with alpha-viniferin inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase a limiting factor in the synthesis of melanin and thus suggesting their use in the treatment of hyperpigmentation. How many people suffer from this kind of skin condition? Many I would say. A grapeseed extract so abundantly presented in the products of Dr. Isidor Apothecary and Perfumery favoring skin angiogenesis and wound healing. Importantly, grapeseed oil is easily absorbed by the skin on which it exerts emollient, mildly astringent and very powerful hydrating effects. I would suggest any our products with grapeseed extract and oil for stress-induced skin damage, particularly in periocular region because of its high regenerative properties. Interestingly, the oil forms actually a thin film on the skin and is therefore used as a vehicle of essential oils as well as in treatment of acne; absolutely amazing facts about grapeseed oil and grape extract. We do use grapeseed oil as a vehicle in many our products as well as carrier for some other essential oils.
Oh sure, I forgot to talk about side effects and toxicity. Is there any? The plant is well tolerated by humans and according the scientific cosmetic literature no cases of toxicity have been reported. I am talking about cosmetic and dermatologic use, of course, not a brandy or wine! For your information, the cosmetic ingredient review expert panel assessed the safety of 24 Vitis vinifera (grape) derived ingredients and found them safe in the present practices of use and concertation in cosmetics. These ingredients function in cosmetics mostly as skin conditioning agents but some function as antioxidants, flavoring agents and colorants.
